A REPOST AF A HELIUM.COM ARTICLE I WROTE.

Preventing elder abuse!

I with an editors help at helium ( THANKS RACHELLE) made some changes. the articles i am reposting here were deleted from helium .com. enjoy every one.

I helped take care of my mom and dad until they died. Mom died in1984 after a stroke and dad died of alzheimers and other health issues. I was very close to my mom and dad, and greatly appreciated how they raised the the five of us and what they taught us. I was born with health problems and have had severe vision problems and two surgeries, though I still have low vision.

I feel the reason so much elder abuse happens is that thereare more selfish younger people today. More people get angry at the world and everyone it it, due to their own poor decision making. Their lives are messed up and they blame their parents and grandparents, because it is easier than facing the fact that the problem is theirs rather than that of society. To answer the question it is a major plus if you have no ill feelings towards senior citizens. If you are not one with selective sight that sees what you want to see, this is another bonus.

Keep your eyes, ears and heart open to their needs. I still do have older friends and family that I care about. If I feel or suspect that something in their lives indicates that they may be being abused of tekn advantage of, I will speak out and notify the proper agency, police or authorities in an effort to protect them.

All States have departments on aging, and in Illinois, when you call the circuit breaker program, or illinois department of public health, you can report elder abuse. Most neighborhoods have YMCA's, community centers, neighborhood watches, and police programs, encouraging members of the public to get involved. The choice is yours to either visit, phone or email and report the abuse to as many agencies as possible to get your complaint taken seriously.

How would you feel if you were being abused. Several people may know of it and keep quiet, and you only have to look at the statistics and stories in the newspapers to see the consequences of keeping quiet and doing nothing. We should all be helpful rather than nosy, and we should ask why these things happen when we could have made a call that made a difference. You should never be afraid to help the vulnerable who need you. I did and I shall never look back. We owe it to our seniors that fought in the wars and paved the way for all of us.
